The Man Your Man Could Smell Like

Smell Like a Man!

Old Spice is a common brand of body spray, and other male grooming products. The Shulton Company, was the original producer of Old Spice, and was founded in 1934 by William Lightfoot Schultz. It was originally made for women, but shortly after they began to move toward male products.

The products were shaving products and aftershave lotion. All products we're packaged with a nautical theme, and still are to this day. Eventually Procter & Gamble purchased Old Spice from the Shulton Company in June 1990. When this happened the original sailboat was replaced by the yacht logo in February 1992. The original Old Spice products had only one scent, but they now have multiple scents, as well as multiple products, including shave gel, deodorant, shower gel, and body spray. You can find these products just about anywhere, but what makes them stand out from the competitors are their advertisements.

One of Old Spice's notorious ad campaigns is “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like.” This thirty second commercial was released on February 8, 2010. Shortly after being launched it became viral. I've even seen it parodied for the 2011 film Puss in Boots It stars Isaiah Mustafa (Old Spice Man), he is extremely confident and masculine. The commercial begins with Mustafa in a bathroom with only a towel on, he then transitions to a sailboat, then onto a white horse, all without breaking eye contact with the camera. By doing this he instills “anything is possible” if a man uses old spice.

What made this ad stand out to me was the fact that it is so different than the majority of ad campaigns. Before I saw this commercial, advertisements always went for obvious humor. The randomness of this ad made it catchy and funny. Now I see commercial that are shot in a similar fashion, such as the new Dairy Queen commercials

Another factor that made this commercial stand out was that despite the product being made for men, the target audience is actually women. In the opening line Mustafa directly greets the audience confidently saying “Hello ladies. Look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me.” Throughout the ad he implies that if women buy their boyfriend or husband Old Spice body wash, they could be just like him. Again saying “anything is possible when your man smells like Old Spice and not a lady.” Women are usually the ones to buy these type of products for the household, which makes this an extremely effective marketing strategy. Old Spice has definitely got me sold!

Who's That Girl? It's Jess!

New Girl is a FOX television sitcom that airs Tuesdays at 9:00 PM. It is currently still in its first season. The cast stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Hannah Simone. On December 15, 2011, the show was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series. Zooey Deschanel was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. The first season is comprised of 24 episodes (still airing), and it has been confirmed that it will be filmed for a second season on April 9, 2012.
The pilot episode starts by introducing the main character Jess Day (Deschanel), who is quirky, eccentric, and totally adorable. She plans on surprising her boyfriend at their house, but she then catches him cheating on her. She then sets out to move on from her relationship and starts looking for a new place and roomates. Via craigslist she meets her new roommates Nick, Coach, and Schmidt, and moves into their loft with them. The roommates get in many tiffs, but in the end they all love eachother.

Nick (Jake Johnson) is a bartender. He was originally going to be a lawyer, but dropped out of law school just one semester shy of graduating.

Coach (Damon Wayans, Jr.) is a personal trainer, who moves out a after the second episode and is replaced by Winston. Winston (Lamorne Morris) is Nicks old childhood friend, who just moved back from overseas where he was playing professional basketball. He is now a “part-time nanny.”

Schmidt (Max Greenfield) is the womanizer of the apartment. He is sort of the stereotypical frat guy. He thinks very highly of himself and at times comes off a little cocky. Almost every episode he has to put money in the “douchebag jar.” He is always scheming to get closer to Jess's best friend Cece.
Cece (Hannah Simone) is Jess's childhood friend. She is a model with a diva like attitude. Although she doesn't live in the apartment she is over quite often. Later in the season she starts a secret relationship with Schmidt.

New Girl has a very unique take on comedy, they never go for cheap laughs or cliche jokes. The humor is similar to The Office, because the characters are a bit over the top and sort of get themselves in trouble.

When I first started watching the show, I expected Jess and Nick to start dating, but New Girl has avoided the stereotypical cast hookups. For this I am thankful, I like the fact that the roommates stay just friends. I think the main plot would get lost in Jess and Nicks relationship.

I am a hooked on this show,  I never miss an episode! I have even gotten my mom hooked on it. One complaint I have is at times Jess can be a bit over the top making the show seem unreal. But all in all New Girl is written very well.
